Hi, my name is Gus Cahill and you may be feeling the way I felt a few
years ago. My wife and I were looking for materials and books to help
our children to build vocabulary and improve spelling ability. Most
approaches were based on rote learning and the words were soon
forgotten, as such approaches did not develop what we have come to call
word awareness.

Through trial and error, and long months of testing different
approaches with our children, we eventually arrived at the format
outlined in our ebooks - Building Word Awareness. Over the years, our
children (now adults) helped to develop and update the process. So our
ebooks are based on years of experimenting with different ways to
encourage children, teenagers and adults to develop an enthusiasm and
love for words and increase vocabulary.

We believe that our approach, through the different levels presented,
offers an opportunity for all children, teenagers and adults to engage
and participate in building vocabulary and improving spelling ability
in a fun and entertaining way.

The information given allows for mental searches within parameters that
children, teenagers and adults feel are within their range. It is also
a very good brain training exercise.

Each page in the ebooks has five words.

It is difficult to put age limits on the different levels as there is
such diversity out there with regard to vocabulary and spelling
ability. Children, teenagers and adults should be matched to the level
that meets their current abilities and the next levels should be used
to encourage expansion of their vocabulary over time.

Using the ebook

In the home

As a family game, or with friends and relations, children and adults
can combine to form teams. Each team can be tested on words from
different levels based on the abilities of the team members. One point
is given when the word is guessed correctly and one point when the
correct spelling is known. First to reach 12 points wins the round.

The four steps in the Building Word Awareness process are:

1. Description of the word outlining the part of speech - noun,
adjective and so on. This introduces the different parts of speech and
assists in developing the use of words in their proper context.

2. Giving the first letter, and how many letters the word contains,
helps to focus the mental search to within a specific range. This sets
parameters and facilitates recall of other words - good brain training
for all ages.

3. The meaning of the word is given and, in this part of the process,
wordpower is increased and a deeper understanding of words is developed
as a lot of other words are examined and recalled from memory. These 3
steps build word awareness and allow for a considered answer to be
attempted.

4. The spelling of the word is the final step. This encourages a
questioning approach to the correct spelling of words. Knowing how many
letters in the word assist in getting the spelling right. Overall
spelling ability is improved.
